People get mad because we print Jim Qualls quite a bit in the 49er.
It's funny because we don't want to always print his comments. Sometimes we have to. We don't always have a plethora of 49er comments and Qualls will call in two or three times a day with various comments. We kind of have to use Qualls to pad the 49er a bit.
Additionally, we've noticed that when we don't print Qualls, our 49er section shrinks.
It seems Qualls sparks quite a bit of ideas from both sides. Of course the left hates him because he represents conservative ideals, so when we do print him we get a lot of flack for catering to the right.
We recently had a reader who wanted us to print what we believed were libelous comments about another community member. This same reader canceled a subscription because of a perception that we cater to the right. Oddly, he canceled the same day we run columns by Jamie O'Neill and Jack Jamison who are not exactly right wing nut jobs.
Bottom line is, if the left wants their comments in the 49er they should call in more often, and not just to bash Qualls or the Post for printing Qualls. The left are supposedly progressive thinking and open minded - so prove it. Give us something we can print that won't libel someone else or get the paper sued.
We welcome most comments from all political sides. But we can't print libelous comments, and if that's all you have, don't be surprised when you don't get printed. And don't get mad just because Qualls knows how to use the 49er call in line.
