Weird Things Grownups (?) Do

A 23 year old man in Texas brought a religious discrimination suit against Wal-Mart when he was fired for wearing a Muslim head-dress, Roman collar shirt and a giant crucifix necklace. The man claimed his religion, (self-founded and called the Universal Belief System) requires this dress. Observed in normal dress outside of work, he claims that is due to the “ever-evolving” nature of his religion.

A 33 year old blind man is appealing a Minnesota decision to refuse him a gun permit. He already has permits to carry a concealed weapon in North Dakota and Utah. He claims to aim by means of sound, gravity and body position.

A man in Germany took his health insurance company to court claiming they should cover the cost of a hairpiece. The court ruled against him noting that “the hair’s protective function against the sun and the cold can easily be replaced by a hat.”

A Brazilian man took his former employer, a brewery, to court claiming his job as a beer taster tuned him into an alcoholic because he was required to drink up to 25 small glasses of beer per each eight-hour shift. He was awarded $49,000.00

A Washington, D.C. judge is suing a local dry cleaner for $65 million. Their offense? They lost his pants and he wants compensation for mental suffering, inconvenience and discomfort. This includes reimbursement for his hours spent on the case and charges for a rental car needed to take his clothes to a more responsible but more distant cleaner.

Why Is It...

I wonder, that we as a people, seem to accept without protest things that don’t really make any sense? Some of these things are small matters and while they may make us look ridiculous, do no serious harm. The messy hair look for instance – how in the world did hairdressers convince people that it is attractive to run around looking like you rubbed gunk in your hair and combed it with an egg beater? And there is the “all my clothes shrunk but I’m wearing them anyway” look. There was a time when having a blouse strain against its buttons was reason enough not to wear it. Now we buy them to fit that way!

On the other hand there are matters, of great import, that we go along with as if there is no choice. Such as acceptance of the idea that the sole purpose of a corporation is to make a profit for shareholders and the concept that a corporation is a person (albeit one that fits the profile of a psychopath) entitled to 14th Amendment protection. Acceptance of these beliefs has allowed the once mutually beneficial capitalism that built the prosperity of this country to become a predatory capitalism that benefits only a few and is undermining the very economy it built.

Just because those chosen few who benefit from these rapacious business practices spend millions on PR to convince people that this is the way it is supposed to be, does not make it so. It can only continue as long as people go along with it. We were asleep at the switch for a long time while clever but unscrupulous people with self-serving agendas whittled away at the protections that had been put in place to keep greed from destroying what the American spirit had built.

The very people who preach the evils of entitlement claim their own entitlement to all the benefits of corporate success as if they alone are responsible for it. They ignore the contribution of the workers without whom there would be no products made or services performed. They show little social responsibility to the communities and countries that supply their workers and their customers. Only when their image is under siege do they suddenly become philanthropic.

The strange thing is they seem unaware that in their greedy quest for more and more profits they are devouring the very market that produces those profits. As jobs disappear and wages stagnate, the great American market is shrinking. NAFTA was supposed to produce a new market in Mexico but here we are years later and the Mexican market has yet to materialize. Since a major purpose of moving production to Mexico was lower wages, the corporations do everything in their power to keep wages down. You can’t grow a market with people who earn barely enough to live. The emergence of a Mexican market seems to have simply been a manipulative creation used to sell NAFTA.

We can look back to the time when capitalism was mutually beneficial. The rich were still rich and their right to a profit is not in question. But unlike today, the workers also benefited and were able to build lives with hope for the future. Those were the days of real American prosperity. Now the corporations claim billions in profits while the workers sink into debt and poverty. And the economy of our country is sinking right along with them. It is a truism that everyone does better when everyone does well.

Gandhi once said the traits most spiritually perilous to humanity are: “Wealth without work, pleasure without conscience, science without humanity, knowledge without character, politics without principle, commerce without morality, and worship without sacrifice.

These traits seem disturbingly prevalent in today’s leaders of business and government.

Weird Things Grownups (?) Say

With their credibility and competence ratings in the tank Bush, Chaney and Gonzales continue to use the phrase “the American people want...” These three officials are so out of touch with the American people they have no idea what we want. If they did, they would all resign!

Republican strategists, looking very earnest, continue to say “the Democrats are in charge why haven’t they …” as though, in the four and one half months Democrats have been in charge they should have accomplished wonders. They totally ignore the abysmal record of the Republicans during the six years they were in charge.

Conservatives continue to complain about the “liberal press.” Haven’t they noticed that most of today’s press is owned by big business which supports conservatives? Think about it, do you really believe that big business goes against its own interests? If you pay close attention to what goes on with the press you will find that important issues are ignored or mentioned once and then buried. The so called liberal issues that get a lot of space are not so much important as they are distracting and divisive. It’s the old slight of hand routine, getting people to look one place while you slip something over in another place.

Many otherwise bright people immediately start talking about Clinton’s wrong doing whenever the subject of this administration’s actions is brought up. When did one man’s transgressions ever justify another man’s wrongs? Remember the old, “he did it first” chant in elementary school? Surely as grownups we don’t still think that way!

We Have The Power

Gas prices are high and everyone is complaining about it. Well, maybe not everyone, the oil companies seem happy enough but most everyone else.

The Republicans were in charge for six years and they did nothing about high gas prices. Now they are busy pointing fingers at the Democrats for not doing something about this problem in the three and one half months they have been in charge. You have to be brain dead to buy into this latest example of self-righteous posturing from the remnants of the do-nothing 109th Congress.

The oil companies’ explanation for the high prices seems just as disingenuous. They say it is due to refinery maintenance interfering with production. There have been rumblings that in some cases, companies have allowed refinery infrastructure to deteriorate while taking huge profits. Maintenance is an unavoidable component of all machinery operations. It is something intelligent people plan for and schedule. Certainly those running refineries are intelligent enough to know this. So if the maintenance is neglected and the inevitable breakdowns occur, they know the effect this will have on supply and demand. If the maintenance is planned but scheduled just when the peak use months are coming, the result is the same - demand exceeds production. Taking either path – neglect or poor planning - guarantees increased gas prices and the record high profits the oil companies are reaping. So let’s call the oil executives to testify once again before congress, but this time, let’s put them under oath. (And tell “he who builds bridges to nowhere” to put a sock in it.!)

That said, we the people have to accept responsibility for our not so slight contributions to the high prices. We are the ones who refuse to conserve energy and therefore continue to increase demand which increases prices. We buy gas guzzling cars, drive hundreds of unnecessary miles because of poor planning or just for pleasure. We run unwatched televisions, leave lights on, heat and cool our homes without thought for anything but our own comfort. We run half empty dishwashers, washing machines, and dryers. We use small appliances that use big energy, like toaster ovens. We excuse ourselves with I’m-just-one-person-thinking and fail to realize that there are 3 hundred million of us just-one-persons.

The oil companies have no incentive to decrease demand – it is contrary to their reason for being. Politicians on both sides are too indebted to oil companies and other big business to force the issue unless great pressure is brought to bear. We, on the other hand, can start cutting back on our energy use this very day. And we can also start pressuring our legislators today.

Complaining about the prices without action will not change anything. But the combination of these actions will make a noticeable change in a short time. We have the power. We have to choose to use it.

The Rest of the Story (as Paul Harvey says)

21st Century Insurance is running several ads right now about how much money you can save with them. But what they don’t advertise is what they do after you become a customer.

I have been a 21st Century customer for 23 years. Last December I had a non-injury fender bender. Some time later, I received a letter from them warning that since it was determined I was at fault, my premium might go up. I called to discuss the situation because I felt since this was my first at fault accident in 23 years and I had no traffic citations during that time; it was a little unreasonable to immediately raise my premium.

I was told, it would not be raised this time, but if I got a ticket or had another accident within 3 years, then this accident as well as the new incident would count against me and increase my premium. Imagine my surprise when my next premium notice arrived and not only had it increased, but it increased 73%!!

I called, explained what I had been told, and was told they were sorry but Proposition 103 made it impossible for them to honor their word. How could that be since Prop 103 was passed in November 1988 and I was told in February 2007 that my premium would not be raised? Even if I could accept that questionable explanation, a 73% increase for a non-injury accident after 23 years is outrageous.

So I recommend, before you consider changing to 21st Century, be sure to ask for a very clear and precise explanation about their premium policies, and you should probably get it in writing.
