We get what we deserve?

An E.R. article covered the story of last night’s Chico State student riot. It seems the students were so upset about the economy, they decided to riot, and they did so with particular enthusiasm, since the police had just broken up the big party they were attending because bottles were flying and fights were erupting. The Chico police chief said that the students were not completely at fault because of the rough financial situation in the country. I confess I never realized that 18 year-olds were that disturbed about current events; I guess I was wrong when I assumed that 18 year-old boys’ priorities were girls, partying, and getting hammered. I’m attempting to picture one of these lads thinking, “my father’s portfolio has just taken a big hit, I am going to start a fire,” or another thinking, “my parents’ mutual funds have lost 30%, I’m going to get up on this car hood and jump up and down, and throw bottles at the police,” or “our blue chip stocks have taken a beating, I’m going to destroy some personal property.” Chief wimp is apparently a product of the politically correct times where nobody takes responsibility for his actions and there is always a way to deflect blame for one’s actions. I’m not sure what Chico residents have done, but they have a heavy-handed obstructionist city council and an inept mayor which invites the saying that, “we get the kind of government we deserve.” It seems we also get the kind of police chief we deserve.
